The “Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale dell’Umbria e delle Marche Togo Rosati” (IZSUM) is a veterinary public health institution working within the Italian National Health Service under the umbrella of the Italian Ministry of Health.

The IZSUM operates in Umbria and Marche regions, in central Italy, with regard to animal health and welfare, food and feed control and hygiene of animal farming. The IZSUM hosts several National Reference Laboratories having the mission to assist the national network of “Istituti Zooprofilattici Sperimentali” (IIZZSS) in the control and diagnosis of specific animal diseases, organize national ring trials, produce and distribute reference material, collect, store and characterized biological samples.

The IZSUM hosts scientific collections of viruses and bacteria of animal origin. The viral collection is the most important assembly of animal Pestiviruses, Asfivirus, bovine and bubaline herpesviruses, and ruminant retroviruses. Concerning the collection of bacteria, the IZSUM veterinary biobank stores: i) bacteria associated with animal diseases of domestic animals and/or causing of zoonotic diseases, such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella enterica, Yersinia spp., Streptococcusspp., Mannehimia spp., Brachyspira spp., Pasteurella multocida, and Clostridioles difficile; ii) bacteria carrying emerging antibiotic resistance determinants; iii) bacteria associated with live bivalve molluscs, such as Vibrio spp. and Aeromonasspp.

The biobank ensures the quality of bacterial specimens through morphological checks followed by identification using MALDI-TOF MS technology.

Access to the data of IZSUM is available only to authenticated users after a formal authorization process.
