LS RI resources for COVID-19

Launch of LS RI Website with COVID-19 Resources

A new website, lifescience-ri.eu, brings together the vast services of 13 Life Science (LS) Research Infrastructures (RIs) in order to advance research in the life sciences.
This website aims to be a common source of comprehensive information about the 13 European LS RIs, their activities, offers, news and funding opportunities. Their joint service catalogue allows to identify which RI might be able to meet a certain user need. The success stories illustrate how access to RI resources can advance research projects.
While content is still being added to the site, a dedicated page on LS RI resources for research on COVID-19 is now available. Please take a careful look at what services and resources are being made available immediately for the scientific community at large.

IS_MIRRI21 Virtual Kick-off Meeting

The Kick-off Meeting of the new European Project IS_MIRRI21 is being held virtually today and tomorrow.

About 50 researchers from more about 20 parnters are watching the presentations given by Workpackage leaders and participating in a intense and lively discussion.

The Joint Research Unit MIRRI-IT is represented by Cristina Varese, Luciana De Vero, Giancarlo Perrone and Paolo Romano, each of them representing her/his Institution, that is partner of the project.

On the first day, presentations on Project Management, Outreach and Dissemination, Research, Governance, Trans-National Access and Training will be given.
On the second day, presentations on the Collaborative Working Environment, Enlargement and Sustainability will follow.
The closing session will allow to define an action plan and to provide all partners with administrative guidelines.

ECCO opinion on proposed changes to ICNP

On February 27, 2020, the Executive Board of the European Culture Collections’ Organization (ECCO) has expressed its concerns on proposed changes to the International Code of Nomenclature of Prokaryotes (ICNP) to the International Committee on Systematics of Prokaryotes.

Such changes could have serious consequences in the activities of ECCO member collections and in their role in biodiversity preservation and distribution for life science researchers. While the current Code requires deposit of a designated type-strain in culture collections in two different countries for valid publication of a species or sub-species, the proposal would allow the use of complete or partial genome sequences as type. This, according to ECCO Executive Board, will take away the firm basis of the system: the type-strains, the biological specimens that allow for a polyphasic approach in characterizing species including DNA-based analyses as well as phenotypic traits.

In their letter, the members of the ECCO Executive Board highlights all negative consequences of the proposed changes. See the letter of the ECCO Executive Board.

Data Driven Innovation in the Agritech Sector

ELIXIR-FR and Bayer are hosting ELIXIR SME meeting on Data Driven Innovation in the Agritech Sector at Lyon, France.

How to transform data into information and knowledge and be able to align them to improving plant health, protect the environment, end hunger in a reasonable agriculture development will be the guiding theme of the conference.
This event is the perfect opportunity to reduce barriers between small and big companies, public and private sectors with a major objective of promoting and supporting open innovation.

A time for flash talks to SME is available.

The event information is at https://elixir-europe.org/events/sme-2020-lyon.

The registration is open-free but compulsory.

Abstract

Microorganisms represent most of the biodiversity of living organisms in every ecological habitat. They have profound effects on the functioning of any ecosystem, and therefore on the health of our planet and of human beings.
Moreover, microorganisms are the main protagonists in food, medical and biotech industries, and have several environmental applications.
Accordingly, the characterization and preservation of microbial biodiversity are essential not only for the maintenance of natural ecosystems but also for research purposes and biotechnological exploitation.
In this context, culture collections (CCs) and microbial biological resource centres (mBRCs) are crucial for the safeguarding and circulation of biological resources, as well as for the progress of life sciences.
This review deals with the expertise and services of CCs, in particular concerning preservation and characterization of microbial resources, by pointing to the advanced approaches applied to investigate a huge reservoir of microorganisms.
Data sharing and web services as well as the tight interconnection between CCs and the biotechnological industry are highlighted.
In addition, guidelines and regulations related to quality management systems (QMSs), biosafety and biosecurity issues are discussed according to the perspectives of CCs and mBRCs.

ENEA, University of Pavia and University of Cagliari are new Associated members

In its last virtual meetings the Scientific Committee of MIRRI-IT has given its positive support to the requests for becoming associated members of three Italian institutions.
The General Assembly of MIRRI-IT has now officially approved their requests.

The Joint Research Unit is therefore welcoming the following Institutions as new Associated members:

Further information on the activities of new members will be added in the web site soon.

Taking into account the five funding partners and the 13 Institutions that joined MIRRI-IT previously, our Joint Research Unit has now reached the huge number of 21 partners!

All Italian Institutions willing to become associated members of MIRRI-IT will find detailed information on the relative procedure in this web site. See the section Documents, under the Organization menu item, for the General Laws of the Joint Research Unit.

Requests must be submitted by email to the Coordinator of MIRRI-IT at coordinatore@mirri-it.it.
